Book Review: Dial A for Aunties by Jessie Q Sutano

 GOODREADS SUMMARY

When Meddelin Chan ends up accidentally killing her blind date, her meddlesome mother calls for her even more meddlesome aunties to help get rid of the body. Unfortunately, a dead body proves to be a lot more challenging to dispose of than one might anticipate, especially when it is accidentally shipped in a cake cooler to the over-the-top billionaire wedding Meddy, her Ma, and aunties are working, at an island resort on the California coastline. It’s the biggest job yet for their family wedding business—“Don’t leave your big day to chance, leave it to the Chans!”—and nothing, not even an unsavory corpse, will get in the way of her auntie’s perfect buttercream cake flowers.

But things go from inconvenient to downright torturous when Meddy’s great college love—and biggest heartbreak—makes a surprise appearance amid the wedding chaos. Is it possible to escape murder charges, charm her ex back into her life, and pull off a stunning wedding all in one weekend?

TEE'S THOUGHTS

This Book!! This will most likely make it onto my favorites of 2021 at the end of the year. I have no complaints about Dial A For Aunties, but I did have so much that I loved about it that if there were bad parts I completely forgot about them.

The concept of the story is completely unbelievable …honestly, but it works if you just take it for what it is. It can be categorized in several genres …cozy mystery, rom-com…um heavily on the com, I found myself laughing out loud several times.

Dial A For Aunties is first and foremost a story about family, a family that will do anything to help you out, and Jesse Q Sutanto does a fantastic job of creating some fantastic family dynamics in this book.

I fell in love with each aunt in this story, they each had big personalities and big hearts, and I can't imagine anyone not enjoying their role in the book, they were definitely one of the main stars. The main character Meddie Chan was so likable that you find yourself rooting for her, hoping that the disaster she has gotten into will turn out right for her.

Another thing that I really liked about the story was the many things that I learned about the Indo-Chinese culture, the book was rich in its description of so many traditions, such as the tea ceremony before a wedding that you actually got a learning experience out of it.

I listened to this book on audio, and really enjoyed the narrator Risa Mei. Not only was her vocals clear and precise, and the clipped Asian accent she used for the aunts and her mom made the book all the better.

This is the perfect summer read, it has everything…murder rekindled love, mystery, murder, excitement, and comedy. It is the perfect book for a pick me up because I can’t imagine someone not laughing at this over the top “ mystery “
