Book Review: Unknown Assailant by J.L. Doucette

GOODREADS SUMMARY: Dr. Pepper Hunt and Detective Beau Antelope team up again to investigate a tragic murder/suicide in a prominent ranch family in the small town of Farson, Wyoming. As they explore events leading up to the night of the disturbing crime they are drawn into the dark heart of a troubled family touched by a legacy of trauma. TEE'S THOUGHTS Call me a bit childish, but every time I read Dr. Pepper Hunt's name in Unknown Assailant it gave me a bit of a giggle. I just want to get that out of the way so I could start in on how I really felt about the book. I have never read one of The Dr. Pepper Hunt Books, but Unknown Assialent is the third book in the series. Granted I am not a huge reader of detective books that center around one detective, I was able to quickly read this book without any problem understanding the story and some of the main characters' back story. It was easily read as a stand-alone, but would most likely be a more in-depth story if you knew mor

Book Review: Twelve Slays Of Christmas by Jacqueline Frost

SUMMARY: When Holly White's fiance cancels their Christmas Eve wedding with less than two weeks to go, Holly heads home with a broken heart. Lucky for her, home in historic Mistletoe, Maine is magical during Christmastime--exactly what the doctor prescribed. Except her plan to drown her troubles in peppermints and snickerdoodles is upended when local grouch and president of the Mistletoe Historical Society Margaret Fenwick is bludgeoned and left in the sleigh display at Reindeer Games, Holly's family tree farm.  When the murder weapon is revealed as one of the wooden stakes used to identify trees on the farm, Sheriff Evan Grey turns to Holly's father, Bud, and the Reindeer Games staff. And it doesn't help that Bud and the reindeer keeper were each seen arguing with Margaret just before her death. But Holly knows her father and is determined to exonerate him. The jingle bells are ringing, the clock is ticking, and if Holly doesn't watch out, she'll end up on San

Book Review: Murder Most Festive by Ada Moncrieff

SUMMARY: Christmas Eve, 1938. The Westbury family and assorted friends have gathered for another legendary celebration at their beautiful country house. The champagne flows, the silverware sparkles, and upstairs the rooms are ready for their occupants. But one bed will lie empty that night. On Christmas morning, David Campbell-Scott is found dead in the snow. There's a pistol beside him and only one set of footprints. Yet something doesn't seem right to amateur sleuth Hugh Gaveston. Campbell-Scott had just returned from overseas with untold wealth - why would he kill himself? Hugh sets out to investigate. TEE'S THOUGHTS Ever since I was in the 6th grade I have been a huge fan of Agatha Christie, and now, in general, any English mystery. The English just seems to know how to write a great mystery, and Ada Moncrieff has given me everything I would expect from a great mystery with Murder Most Festive. There is a big country manor, I mean what English mystery is without one of

GOODREADS SUMMARY: What price is too high to pay, even for love? When Jace and Clary meet again, Clary is horrified to discover that the demon Lilith’s magic has bound her beloved Jace together with her evil brother Sebastian, and that Jace has become a servant of evil. The Clave is out to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. As Alec, Magnus, Simon, and Isabelle wheedle and bargain with Seelies, demons, and the merciless Iron Sisters to try to save Jace, Clary plays a dangerous game of her own. The price of losing is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she still trust him? Or is he truly lost? Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge. Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series. OUR THOUGHTS: Ok. Wow. This book certainly redeemed the story which was running a bit slow for me. So let's get into it... This month we are doing somethi

Book Review: Seven Days of Us by Francesca Hornak

GOODREADS SUMMARY: It’s Christmas, and for the first time in years, the entire Birch family will be under one roof. Even Emma and Andrew’s elder daughter—who is usually off saving the world—will be joining them at Weyfield Hall, their aging country estate. But Olivia, a doctor, is only coming home because she has to. Having just returned from treating an epidemic abroad, she’s been told she must stay in quarantine for a week…and so too should her family. For the next seven days, the Birches are locked down, cut off from the rest of humanity—and even decent Wi-Fi—and forced into each other’s orbits. Younger, unabashedly frivolous daughter Phoebe is fixated on her upcoming wedding, while Olivia deals with the culture shock of being immersed in first-world problems.  As Andrew sequesters himself in his study writing scathing restaurant reviews and remembering his glory days as a war correspondent, Emma hides a secret that will turn the whole family upside down.  In close proximity, not
