Book Review: A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G Summers

Image
GOODREADS SUMMARY: Food critic Dorothy Daniels loves what she does. Discerning, meticulous, and very, very smart, Dorothy's clear mastery of the culinary arts make it likely that she could, on any given night, whip up a more inspired dish than any one of the chefs she writes about. Dorothy loves sex as much as she loves food, and while she has struggled to find a long-term partner that can keep up with her, she makes the best of her single life, frequently traveling from Manhattan to Italy for a taste of both. But there is something within Dorothy that's different from everyone else, and having suppressed it long enough, she starts to embrace what makes Dorothy uniquely, terrifyingly herself. Recounting her life from a seemingly idyllic farm-to-table childhood, the heights of her career, to the moment she plunges an ice pick into a man's neck on Fire Island, Dorothy Daniels show us what happens when a woman finally embraces her superiority. TEE'S THOUGHTS: If you like G

Book Review: The Orchard by David Hopen

GOODREADS SUMMARY Ari Eden’s life has always been governed by strict rules. In ultra-Orthodox Brooklyn, his days are dedicated to intense study and religious rituals, and adolescence feels profoundly lonely. So when his family announces that they are moving to a glitzy Miami suburb, Ari seizes his unexpected chance for reinvention. Enrolling in an opulent Jewish academy, Ari is stunned by his peers’ dizzying wealth, ambition, and shameless pursuit of life’s pleasures. When the academy’s golden boy, Noah, takes Ari under his wing, Ari finds himself entangled in the school’s most exclusive and wayward group. These friends are magnetic and defiant—especially Evan, the brooding genius of the bunch, still living in the shadow of his mother’s death. Influenced by their charismatic rabbi, the group begins testing their religion in unconventional ways. Soon Ari and his friends are pushing moral boundaries and careening toward a perilous future—one in which the traditions of their faith are re

Book Review: The Pink Hotel by Lisa Jacobs

GOODREADS SUMMARY: Confined to an opulent Beverly Hills hotel during a raging wildfire, a young couple is caught in the escalating tension between the wealthy guests and the staff. Newlyweds Keith and Kit Collins can hardly believe their luck when the general manager of the iconic, opulent Pink Hotel invites them to come for a luxurious stay as a bid to hire Keith. Kit loves their small-town life, but Keith has always wanted more, and the glittering, lily-scented lobby makes him feel right at home. Soon after their arrival, wildfires sweep through the surrounding mountains and Los Angeles becomes a pressure cooker, with riots breaking out across the city amid rolling blackouts. The Pink Hotel closes its doors to "outsiders," and Keith and Kit find themselves confined with an anxious, disgruntled staff and a growing roster of eccentric, ultra-wealthy, dangerously idle guests who flock to the hotel for sanctuary, company, and entertainment. A blistering, dark social satire, Th

Book Review: Mythos by Stephen Fry

Image
GOODREADS SUMMARY: Mythos is a modern collection of Greek myths, stylishly retold by legendary writer, actor, and comedian Stephen Fry. Fry transforms the adventures of Zeus and the Olympians into emotionally resonant and deeply funny stories, without losing any of their original wonder. Celebrating the thrills, grandeur, and unabashed fun of the Greek myths, Mythos breathes life into ancient tales—from Pandora's box to Prometheus's fire. TEE'S THOUGHTS: Oh, how I loved Mythos. My dad was a huge lover of Greek Mythology and I was raised hearing all the stories of the different Gods as bedtime stories. When my dad died 6 years ago, his one request was to be buried at sea, first because he had spent 30 years in the Navy and second because he would be with Posiden. He got his wish and now resides with the mighty God that controls the oceans somewhere near the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific. I picked this up because I am a huge fan of Stephan Fry, I love his classic British H

Tuesday's Tune featuring Sophia Bel

Image
Today on Tuesday Tunes we are showcasing Montreal's Sophia Bel and her newest single " I Won't Bite " We love her breathy ethereal vocals on the new track and the twangy guitars that seem to highlight it perfectly. Here is what Sophia has to say about her " I Won't Bite " "'I Won’t Bite' is pure bliss, it’s a warm summer breeze that turns your insides to mush, it’s a dragonfly on an august evening that lights up your senses and you want to hold it but you know you can’t. I wrote this song in a state of euphoria, with that feeling in the back of my mind that nothing is to be taken for granted. It’s the honeymoon stage with a hint of the terrifying fear of losing someone.    Christian Sean and I recorded the guitar and vocals in one take, together in the same room. It was amazing to have the space to capture the synergy that can only be captured while recording simultaneously. We then proceeded to add drums and banjo. I listened to a good amo
