THORNHEDGE BY T. KINGFISHER
Meet Toadling. On the day of her birth, she was stolen from her family by the fairies, but she grew up safe and loved in the warm waters of faerieland. Once an adult though, the fae ask a favor of Toadling: return to the human world and offer a blessing of protection to a newborn child. Simple, right?
But nothing with fairies is ever simple.
Centuries later, a knight approaches a towering wall of brambles, where the thorns are as thick as your arm and as sharp as swords. He's heard there's a curse here that needs breaking, but it's a curse Toadling will do anything to uphold…
I love Kingfisher's books, they are always vivid and imaginative, and sometimes truly weird. This was one of my birthday club books and I am starting it tonight, so this teaser is even new to me! I just opened the book and fell on page 61...
Toadling looked up " I do complain" she croaked " At least a little "
The Queens lips curved into a ghost of a smile, but it was fleeting " I had hoped that you had cursed her" she said " That your gift was truly a curse. But you didn't, did you?"
Toadling shook her head " No. She...she isn't..." No, she could not say that Fayette was a changeling - who would believe her? Someone would ask where the real child was and what a terrible road that would be to walk down.

I am excited to start reading this book
