Book Review: Overdue by Stephanie Perkins

GOODREADS SUMMARY:

Ingrid Dahl, a cheerful twenty-nine-year-old librarian in the cozy mountain town of Ridgetop, North Carolina, has been happily dating her college boyfriend, Cory, for eleven years without ever discussing marriage. But when Ingrid’s sister announces her engagement to a woman she’s only been dating for two years, Ingrid and Cory feel pressured to consider their future. Neither has ever been with anybody else, so they make an unconventional decision. They'll take a one-month break to date other people, then they'll reunite and move toward marriage. Ingrid even has someone in mind: her charmingly grumpy coworker, Macon Nowakowski, on whom she’s secretly crushed for years. But plans go awry, and when the month ends, Ingrid and Cory realize they’re not ready to resume their relationship― and Ingrid’s harmless crush on Macon has turned into something much more complicated.

TEE'S THOUGHTS

Remember a few years back when Stephanie Perkins wrote her books Anna and Lola? Ok it might of been a bit more than a FEW years ago, but .... Man, how I quickly learned the meaning of book boyfriend when I read Lola and the Boy Next Door...I absolutley adored Cricket and his quirky self. To be honest I loved all of Perkin's YA romances. Was I excite to get a chance to listen to Overdue early? You bet I was. To me it was kind of her return to her romance roots, with characters that were not a bit more grown up and handling grown up life.

While I did not hate this book, there was more I disliked about it than liked and that mainly had to do with the " lets break up, date others, to see if we really love eacch other and waat to get  married " idea. Now this is my personal opinion and has no bearing on the writing, which was good, it is how I felt about the plot, I know many people will find this fine. I myself, found it to be an awful plot. If you have been together as long as Ingrid and Cory have, and you havent gotten married yet, who ever is the hold out, should pack their bags and get on with their life. Never should you go off and date others, while holding on to a back up. It felt like... I like you, but let me make sure there is no one I like better first. YOU KNOW, at this point if you want to be with a person or not.

I liked Ingrid, she was great at dealing with Cory's decision to try this dating other people. (I would have had a few choice worda to say to him )  I liked how she bravely put herself out there, especially with Macon. Macon.... he was a man of few words, but I warmed up to him toward the end of the book, it just took me awhile.  As for Cory, don't even get me started on him.

Overdue was very much a slow burn romance, and by that I mean slow, there were times I felt it drug on to long. As I have said, I didnt hate it, but I also wasnt crazy about it, not like her YA romances she had written in the past. This was very personal, dislike. I have watched someone close to me go through this same senerio, but they had enough pride to say ...NO...and walked, like I would hope most people would do. Ingrid should have kicked Cory to the door for even suggesting this idea and gone one with her life, without him hanging in her background.

I do want to thanl Macmillan Audio for the early listen, I did enjoy the narrator and thought the reading was well suited to the story, I just wish I could have enjoyed the story a bit more
