MAFIA MONDAY...KIND OF....THE EDGE OF DARKNESS SERIES BY LEIGH RIVERS
Technically, The Edge of Darkness trilogy by Leigh Rivers isn’t a traditional mafia series… but it lives so deep in the organized crime underworld that there was no way I could leave it off Mafia Monday.
This series follows Kade Mitchell and Stacey Rhodes. Stacey is Kade’s twin sister’s best friend, and they fall deeply in love before one heartbreaking event tears them apart. I won’t spoil what happens, because discovering it yourself is part of the experience but it is absolutely devastating.
Years later, they find their way back to one another, carrying years of grief, resentment, obsession, and love. What follows isn’t a sweet second-chance romance. It’s dark, messy, consuming, and at times almost painful to read. The relationship between Kade and Stacey is intense, tragic, obsessive, and heartbreaking in ways I wasnt prepared for. I cried more over this series than I have over most books I have read, and honestly, it is hard to explain why it affected me so deeply.
These three books don’t just tell Kade and Stacey’s story—they pull you into an entire world where everyone has blood on their hands. No one is innocent. Every character is tangled up in the criminal underworld, and every decision has consequences. And let me warn you… these books do not let up.
There were chapters where I genuinely had to put the book down because I couldn’t bear what was happening. I cried more during this series than I have over most books I’ve ever read. By the time I reached the final books, I felt like Leigh Rivers had reached into my chest, grabbed my heart, and refused to give it back. So many dark romances balance the heartbreak with lighter moments, it will have chapters that let you recover before it throws more emotional baggage at you. The Edge of Darkness does not. So if you like me,want a book to wreck you, I am handing you three with this series.
Now let’s address the men…
Every single one of them is a walking red flag. Not a cute little red flag either. More like one of those giant inflatable tube men outside a car dealership flailing around yelling, “ABSOLUTELY NOT.”
And yet, you will find yourself saying No he is different
Spoiler you cannot.
Did that stop me from loving them anyway?
No.
Kade Mitchell has officially become one of my favorite book boyfriends, and I will not be accepting criticism about the number of people he’s killed. My lawyer has advised me not to discuss it further. No. Seriously, for all his violence, obsession, and horrible decisions, one thing never changes, he never stops loving Stacey. Not when he is angry. No when he resents her. Not evenwhen he things she is the reason his world and life has fallen apart. That love is what made me root for him through all these situations that I cringe at on ID Channel
And the side characters, oh how I adored them. Base completely stole my heart, and I desperately need a book for him and Lu. Even Kade’s father—a homicidal psychopath who has spent years in prison—managed to worm his way into my heart. (He has his own book, which is already waiting for me… but I need a few days to emotionally recover before I let Leigh Rivers destroy me again.)
If you love dark romance filled with organized crime, obsessive love, morally gray characters, heartbreak, and stories that will absolutely wreck you before slowly putting you back together… this series deserves a spot on your shelf.
When you read, you will find some books entertain you, some stay with you, but The Edge of Darkness series did something else, it broke my heart, but it also stitched it back together in the end.
