BOOK REVIEW: THE SHIPPERS BY KATHERINE CENTER

Image
GOODREADS SUMMARY After a whole lifetime of being bad at love, JoJo Burton decides to solve her intimacy issues once and for all at her sister’s destination wedding on a cruise ship. With the help of a little pop psychology, she diagnoses herself with a fixation on the neighborhood guy who was her her first crush and first kiss (and who just happens to be a newly-divorced wedding guest ), and she decides to woo him during the cruise for some long-delayed closure. Only problem is, her sister’s a little busy being a bride at the moment—so JoJo ropes in her childhood bestie, Cooper Watts, to be her wing man. Cooper: who RSVPed no, but then showed up, anyway. Cooper: who left town without a word four years earlier and moved to London. Cooper: who was, if she’s honest, the worst heartbreak of JoJo’s life. It’s bliss for her to see him again, and it’s agony, too—and the more they team up for Project Conquest, the more she obsesses over questions she can’t bring herself to ask. Shipboard anti...

BOOK REVIEW: COLLATERAL STARDUST BY NIKKI NASH

Image
GOODREAD SUMMARY: Born in Hollywood, and raised by a radical, Black Panther-supporting mother and a charismatic trombone-playing father, Nikki Nash grew up surrounded by musicians, actors, conspiracy theorists, political fundraisers, jazz jams, and lots of alcohol-fueled parties. At thirteen she was lonely, longing for attention, and desperate to find something to fill the void. It wasn't a pony. It was Warren Beatty. She made a secret vow to find him and have him in her life forever. She wasn't naive and this wasn't a fantasy; she had a solid plan. And the first step was to grow up. Five years later, Nash—now eighteen—embarks on the next step of her plan. After quitting college, she learns that Warren Beatty—who lives at the Beverly Hills Hotel—frequents a nearby restaurant. She gets a hostess job there and waits. In the meantime, she has endless strange encounters with stalkers, sociopaths, actors, agents, mobsters, and producers. It takes a year-and-a-half, but on a cold...

A Small Celebration For World Book Day

Image
There are many ways to mark the passing of a day:  holidays on calendars, the changing of the seasons,or just the quiet turning of the pages of the book you are currently reading. Today is World Book Day, which feels like the perfect excuse to pause for a moment and celebrate the small magic that books bring into our lives. Books have always been more than stories to me. They are companions stacked on nightstands, piled beside chairs, and sometimes balanced precariously in towers that threaten to topple at any moment. They are the reason my house always smells faintly of paper and coffee, and why my heart still leaps a little when a package arrives at the door with a new story inside. Books have taken me everywhere — dark forests and distant kingdoms, quiet villages, haunted houses, and places so beautiful they linger in my mind long after the final page. They have introduced me to characters who feel like old friends and stories that stay  inside my thoughts for ye...
