Book Beginnings: Maidens by Alex Michaelides
Every Friday Book Beginnings hosted by Rose City Readers asks you to grab the book you are reading and share the first sentence or paragraph and then give your feelings on it or anything else that it inspires. Be sure to include the title and the author
I am being a very slow reader, due to getting ready for a show in October, working on the house, and our high holidays coming this month, so I am starting our monthly book club read today. I won't have it read until I need to, but if I don't start now I will never get it read LOL...sad but true these next few months
Edward Fosca was a murderer.
This was a fact. This wasn't something Mariana knew just on an intellectual level, as an idea. Her body knew it. She felt it in her bones, along her blood, and deep within every cell.
Edward Forsca was guilty.
I have been wanting to read The Maidens since it first came out and I am glad that we picked it for our September book club because it forced me to take it from my shelf and get it read. I am a huge fan of any book that takes place at a University or posh private school.
And while the first paragraph of the prologue was good it was just the random page before the title page that really caught my attention.
Tell me tales of thy first love--
April hopes, the fools of chance
Till the graves begin to move,
And the dead begin to dance.
This is from The Vision of Sin by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. I have never read his poetry, I have kept my poetry reading to Sappho, Shelley, and Byron, but this short passage has me wanting to explore the entire poem and more of his works.
If you haven't read The Maidens yet and want to come join our book club...we will have the dates up here on the blog soon.
Do you read poetry?
I don't usually read poetry. The Maidens sound good. Have a great weekend!
